Review: Enchantment Park in 3D and 4D

unnamed

It’s not exactly a logically sound rule of thumb to have, but whenever I see an overly pep filled person, I immediately assume they've got some severed limbs buried somewhere in their backyard. Never trust happy people! There's always something hiding underneath. While this is not a principle I would suggest anyone else adopt, I'm always happily surprised when I see other people who believe the same thing, and the sketch group behind Enchantment Park in 3D and 4D at The PIT executes on this apparently burgeoning hypothesis quite swimmingly.

Using an environment (the theme park) whose sole purpose for existence is to manufacture happiness, writer Daniel Florio and his sketch group The Grape Dutches of York expose the truth about the kinds of people who are inescapable at Disney World and Six Flags each and every summer. The dad wearing high socks and cargo shorts with a fanny pack safely tightened around his waist is very aware that his family isn't as perfect as his Leave It To Beaver facade purports. People who wear a universally adored character's costume do not share the same sprightly spunk. Security guards are the fucking worst. And Jewish teenagers are wonderful at under-the-shirt stuff on roller coasters.

Sure, there are plenty of uncouth and dark goings on all over Enchantment Park, but the tone of the show never reverts to the maudlin. The sadness being inflicted on most of these characters is adeptly paired with supremely high levels of silliness and optimism, so the shame or regret they might experience in a moment never sticks to any of them for too long. The recurring joke that each food stand and roller coaster ride is named after a heavy movie like Schindler's List or 12 Years A Slave plays to this idea perfectly. And the pace of the show is so swift that by the time you realize that the performers actually have, in fact, just made a Paul Walker joke, they’ve moved onto a completely different scene.

Enchantment Park is an expansive world, never spreading itself too thin. Each storyline pays off handsomely, one even ending in a father-son battle on board the Death Star, which is basically the Madison Square Garden for father-son battles. And while the park may not have any customer skeletons buried deep beneath its "Mr. Holland’s Wild Opus" roller coaster ride, the fake happiness earns its rightful exit. It’s safe to enter now! Come one, come all! Just don’t be surprised if you stumble across a corpse or two.

Enchantment Park in 3D and 4D continues its run at The PIT through April 16.
