Bullock & McCarthy Bring Out The Heat!

Summer weather finally made it to New York this weekend, making it the perfect time for the NY premiere of one of this summer's best variations on the buddy comedy: "The Heat."

Unlike most buddy comedy films, "The Heat" features two women in a good cop/bad cop routine, with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock playing officers who develop an unlikely friendship.  McCarthy plays a coarse and rebellious police officer, while Bullock plays along as the uptight cop who has to loosen up a bit to fit in.  In real life the two actresses seem very comfortable with each other: on the red carpet they could be seen joking with each other and making faces.

Bullock admitted to me that McCarthy can kick some ass: "She's definitely the bad ass, more than me."  And screenwriter Katie Dippold told me that one of the scenes featured in the trailer, when Bullock is in the bathroom putting on spanks, was their idea; they also improvised with scotch tape (look for the scene in the film).

For "The Heat," McCarthy reunited with "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig, who orchestrated their performances between the original screenplay and these improvised scenes.  At the premiere, Feig revealed his directing secret: "You cast the funniest ladies on the planet and you get out of their way." He keeps the tone raunchy, mouthy, and dirty -- all things McCarthy is a genius at making it her own.

The film opens in theaters on June 28th and it promises to heat up the screen! Take a look at the trailer:
