New LaBute Among OB One-Acts, June 13-28

Fans of prolific playwright and screenwriter Neil LaBute can see “Reasons to Be Happy,” his new full-length play (and follow-up to his “Reasons to Be Pretty”), at the Lucille Lortel Theater, where the show began previews last week. But super-fans can catch a new LaBute one-act next month as part of Theater Breaking Through Barriers’ third annual Short Play Festival. Called “Call Back,” the dark comedy tells of the agonies of actors.

Six ten-minute world premieres were commissioned by TBTB for the Festival which is titled “Still More of Our Parts.” Running June 13-28 at midtown’s Clurman Theater, the evening also includes premieres by Bekah Brunstetter, Bruce Graham, Lynn Manning, Samuel D. Hunter and Jerrod Bogard, all of whom tackle the ramifications of some kind of disability in their short plays.

Featured in the cast, which mixes “artists with disabilities with able-bodied actors” (hence TBTB’s name and mission), is Broadway star Tonya Pinkins, who won a Tony for “Jelly’s Last Jam” and was also Tony-nommed for “Play On” and “Caroline, or Change.”
