Valentine’s Day Theater Picks: 2015

Roses are red, violets are blue, take your one and only to the theater this Valentine’s Day and they will surely love you!

What could be better this February than cozying up to your sweetheart while taking in a show and celebrating love day? Check the list below for a variety of picks for date night -- or if you are single and fabulous, simply take yourself out to celebrate how much you rock!

1. Aladdin

It just isn’t Valentine’s Day without a Disney love story, and it certainly doesn’t get any more romantic than Aladdin. Share the fun with your prince or princess as you relive your childhood and all the magic that is falling in love. Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), Courtney Reed (Jasmine) and James Monroe Iglehart (Genie) light up the stage with their quick wit, flawless voices, and enchanting presence guaranteed to transport audiences to “A Whole New World.”

2. Phantom of the Opera

Broadway’s classic love story! With a hauntingly beautiful musical score and the Paris Opera House coming to life before your eyes, this tale will keep you on the edge of your seat as the journey of true love unfolds.

A play by Nick Payne starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson, Constellations explores the moment when a man and woman meet -- and the many, many possible moments that might follow.

4. Honeymoon in Vegas

Love means going that extra mile, and this lively cast invites all to join in the celebration! Honeymoon in Vegas is a quirky and fun tale that details commitment-phobe Jack's (Rob McClure) journey to the altar with love Betsy (Brynn O' Malley). His strength is tested along the way as his competition enters -- in the form of the charming Tommy (Tony Danza) -- and forces him to fight for what's in his heart. Laughs are plentiful in this musical about the great lengths taken for love!

5. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

It’s not too late to take your love to The Stephen Sondheim Theatre for this extraordinary celebration of music, friendship, and pure joy. Get lost in the sweet and captivating sounds of Jessie Mueller (Carole King), Scott J. Campbell (Gerry Goffin), Anika Larsen (Cynthia Weil), and Jarrod Spector (Barry Mann) as they recreate the early days of rock n’ roll songwriting at 1650 Broadway. With hits like “Some Kind of Wonderful”, “He’s Sure the Boy I Love”, “The Loco-motion”, “You’ve Got A Friend” and countless others, intertwined with an empowering story, your Valentine will be sure to love you tomorrow.

6. Men and Women Talking Love and Sex

Written, directed and produced by John Paul Porter, this hilarious and entertaining show, now playing at the Davenport Theatre, unabashedly tells the story of what really happens between the two sexes. Following the course of a relationship (with friends looking on and adding in their two cents) from the lovey dovey beginning stages to the downright awkward and sometimes painful moments, Men and Women Talking Love and Sex proves to be an all-too-true account of the game of love.

7. The Fantasticks

1Brought to audiences by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, The Fantasticks has captured the hearts of millions in its 50+ year run. This timeless boy-meets-girl, boy-and-girl-fall-in-love, boy-and-girl-go-their-separate-ways, boy-and-girl-reunite plot allows audiences to fill in the gaps and soak up all the wonder and mystery that is falling head over heels in love. With delightful music and narration, The Fantasticks will re-assure all that love is always worth it, no matter what the obstacle.

8. Let The Right One In

If mushiness is not your thing, Let the Right One In will certainly be a breath of fresh air!  A chilling production from the National Theatre of Scotland now playing at St. Ann's Warehouse, it tells the story of two lonely teenagers -- one of them a vampire. Can their companionship and attachment to one another be the light that brightens their dark worlds?

9. New York City Ballet - Romeo + Juliet

This production will stimulate the senses with its dramatic score by Prokofiev and alluring visual elements (think of the famous balcony scene and rendezvous in moonlit courtyards). Prepare to get lost in the romance and human angst!

10. Into the Woods

Fiasco Theater's wonderful, stripped-down revival of the unforgettable Tony Award-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine is presented by Roundabout Theatre Company and features just 10 actors and a piano. Don't miss this iconic story about fairy tale characters like Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk), and Cinderella.
