Mix the truthfulness of Johnny Cash and the pure tones of Nat King Cole in a shaker and pour yourself a strong cocktail of Michael Winters. Winter’s story, culminating in this debut recording, A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION, should inspire anybody who has a creative dream. The concert at The Laurie Beechman Theatre on Oct. 27th is the celebration of the official release of his CD, which will take place in November.
Winters, a successful Oklahoma doctor who always loved to sing, brings his spellbinding baritone to the table, as well as a disarming connection to his music and lyrics. The authenticity in his treatment of every song on this recording creates a vivid soundtrack to who he truly is: unfussy, charming, sensual and completely natural.
Produced by the multi-award winning Stacy Sullivan (who happens to be his childhood friend and a fellow Oklahoman) with musical direction by ace pianist and arranger, Tedd Firth, A Pre-Existing Condition is a synthesis of classics and country that works because it speaks directly from Winters’ heart.
From Pete Smith’s joyous guitar solo on a brilliant treatment of Luck Be a Lady to the winsome duet between Phil Palombi’s bass and Aaron Weinstein’s violin on In Passing Years, the musicianship throughout A Pre-Existing Condition is consistently excellent. Mark McLean, master of the drums, and Will Galison on his magic harmonicas contributed immeasurably to this recording.
