Experience the Trinidadian trumpeter and his band as they filter reggae, Calypso, and Afro-Caribbean music into a modern jazz conception. Coming to you virtually from the stage at Miller Outdoor Theatre!
Etienne Charles has been hailed by the New York Times as “an auteur” and by Jazz Times as “a daring improviser who delivers with heart-wrenching lyricism.” Etienne is one of the most exciting jazz artists leading the genre into groundbreaking new territory. According to Downbeat Magazine, “Charles delivers his ebullient improvisations with the elegance of a world-class ballet dancer.”
Etienne’s latest recording is Carnival – The Sound of a People, Vol 1. The New York Times called it “his most invigorating record yet…Its dances and songs peer back across centuries, into the years of black indentured servitude, slavery and, ultimately, freedom on the other side of the Atlantic.” Etienne Charles is a Guggenheim Fellow in the Creative Arts and has been written into US Congressional Record for his musical contributions to Trinidad and Tobago and the world.
All performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre are funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.
The Miller Outdoor Theatre Dream Streams Virtual Series is sponsored by HEB.
