Early-career writer and actor Jacob Grover has announced that his full-length play “Demonstration of a Drunk Driving Accident,” directed by Joel Kirk, will be running for four nights at the Alchemical Theater Laboratory.
“Demonstration of a Drunk Driving Accident” centers on a group of high school seniors attempting to stage an informational mock car crash to spread awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving in anticipation of their prom. But their once-conventional rehearsal begins to break down as the speckled record of the groups’ past comes to light, shattering the bonds of friendship they once thought impermeable and the illusion that their youth make them invincible. The piece grapples not only with the fleeting nature of adolescent innocence but the meta-
theatrical implications of “scared-straight” programs, questioning the merit and efficacy of didactic pseudo-theater. The material derives from Grover’s own experience with a similar type of program put on by his high school while he was a student.
The play features Kendall DuPre, Chapman Hyatt, Michelle Davis, John DiMino, and Stephanie Wurster.
The production is being directed by Joel Kirk, produced by Jonathan Evans and Rebecca Lampiasi, with Chase Crandell serving as co-producer.
Tate Rehklau and Grant Farsi served as lighting designers and Lucas Castro as stage manager.
Poster and promotional art design by Luke Strickler.
