Hunger & Thirst Theatre is thrilled to present the folk musical MONSTRESS, featuring a book and lyrics by Emily Kitchens with original music by Ben Quinn and Titus Tompkins, and directed by Hondo Weiss-Richmond.
Featuring original bluegrass and country music, MONSTRESS is a homespun musical that celebrates the rejuvenating power of storytelling. A band of humble folx gather on the back porch to swap some stories: specifically the infamous tales of female monsters from Greek mythology (Medusa, Sphinx, the Sirens, and others). But these folx don’t want to tell the stories in any old way; they want to snatch these monstrous myths away from the patriarchy once and for all—share them in a fresh, empowering light. MONSTRESS proves to be an unmissable theatrical event: a fiercely feminine work full of combative charm and inspiring delight.
The cast features a team of accomplished actors and musicians: Rheanna Atendido, Olivia Billings, Jianzi Colón-Soto (She Persisted, The Musical at Atlantic Theater Company), Philip Estrera, Natalie Hegg, Jordan Kaplan, Allison Kelly, Adam Boggs McDonald and Titus Tompkins (The Winter’s Tale at Theater for a New Audience).
The design team includes Jiaying Zhang (set design); Yang Yu (lighting design); and Sera Bourgeau (costume design). The choreographer is Olivia Palacios. Heather Olmstead is the Production Stage Manager.
MONSTRESS is recommended for ages 13 and up, due to moments of strong language and onstage violence.
We are following the Covid-19 protocols of our venue, New Ohio Theatre. Currently all patrons must show proof of vaccination to attend the performance and must wear a mask while in the theater.
