Brooklyn-born journalist Joe Sexton’s acclaimed new nonfiction book, The Lost Sons of Omaha: Two Young Men in an American Tragedy (Scribner – May 9, 2023), unpacks two linked and tragic deaths stemming from the 2020 George Floyd protests. It tells the story of James Scurlock, a 22-year old Black protester killed by Marine veteran and bar owner Jake Gardner, who then took his own life. Their intertwined deaths and the social media frenzy that followed provides Sexton with a lens to examine some of the most pressing issues facing America today: our racial mistrust and division, our dire need for gun control, and the toxic power of fake news. Join him for this conversation moderated by Errol Louis, NY1 Political Anchor and host of Inside City Hall. A Brooklyn Pubilc Library (BPL)and the Center For Brooklyn History (CBH) event.
