In On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco and Other Substances, director Lita Lofton masterfully reimagines Anton Chekhov’s hidden gems—short stories, letters, and lesser-known plays—into a vibrant tapestry of wit and humanity. Over four years, Lofton dedicated herself to crafting a modern adaptation, meticulously comparing translations to preserve the brilliance of Chekhov’s style while infusing contemporary resonance. Featuring an all-Black cast, this production transforms the stage into a celebration of universal themes and intimate truths, bringing fresh life to a timeless narrative. A mesmerizing mix of humor, pathos, and keen observation, it’s Chekhov like you’ve never seen before.

The cast includes Justin P. Armstrong as Sasha, Coda Leana Boyce as Elena, Bryce Foley as Ivan, Aidan Cazeau (Feb 20-23) and Marshall Evan McGuire (Feb 27-March 2) as Andrei, Nancy Umba as Nastasya, Ashley Riboul as Dashenka, Seth Hill as Alexei, and Logan Slater as Luka.
