Ronnie James Tucker, professionally known as Ro James, is a GRAMMY-Award nominated, platinum-certified American R&B singer and songwriter. Known for his gritty songwriting and exceptionally rich vocal delivery, James seamlessly bridges the gap between classic early-’70s soul and modern, trap-infused production. Early Life and Musical Roots: Born in Stuttgart, Germany, to a military veteran father, Ro James spent his childhood moving across the United States, including stints in New York, Indiana, California, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Texas. Raised in a highly religious household, his earliest exposure to music came from the pews of his father’s church, where he grew up almost exclusively listening to gospel music. Beyond church, he was deeply influenced by a broad musical spectrum ranging from Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway to Jodeci. Although he began playing the drums at the age of nine, James initially resisted pursuing a music career. It wasn’t until a major, life-altering breakup during his time in Indianapolis that he channeled his emotions into writing his very first song. Encouraged by his friends, he committed fully to his craft and relocated to the New York City music scene. Career and Major Breakthrough: Ro James first captured the industry’s attention independently. By late 2013, he self-released a critically acclaimed, three-part EP series titled Coke, Jack, and Cadillacs, which featured guest appearances from Snoop Dogg and Asher Roth. The project established his signature, unboxed “raw soul” sound and caught the eye of legendary music executive Mark Pitts.
James subsequently signed with ByStorm Entertainment / RCA Records. In 2015, he released his commercial breakout single, “Permission”. The Willie Hutch-sampling smash hit reached #37 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, achieved RIAA Platinum certification, and earned James his first Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance. Discography and Artistry: Eldorado (2016): His major-label debut studio album peaked at #8 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, solidifying his place as a leading voice in contemporary R&B.Smoke (2018): A bridge EP that continued to showcase his smooth, sultry vocal stylings. “Mantic” (2020): His sophomore studio album, highlighted by powerhouse collaborations with R&B heavyweights like Miguel (“Too Much”) and Brandy (“Plan B”). Throughout his career, James has built an intensely loyal fanbase on platforms like Ro James on Instagram and Spotify by delivering music that is vulnerable, fresh, and deeply authentic. Currently working on new music. Working with other artists to revive the Big Brother and Big Sister program back with a twist. Focusing on young artists’ guidance.
Since its founding in 1980, Lehman Center for the Performing Arts has been deeply rooted in the cultural life of the Bronx. As the only theater of its size in the borough, with a capacity of more than 2,200 seats, Lehman Center provides Bronx residents with local, affordable access to high-quality live performances that entertain, educate, inspire, and celebrate the traditions of a multi-cultural community. In its 46-year tenure, The Center has been committed to bringing both local and national attention to historically underrepresented groups in the performing arts, such acts as Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald in the 80s and 90s, to the Janelle Monae Super Bowl halftime show in 2011. Lehman Center serves the artistic needs of the community through four distinct programming series: “Punchline,” “First Curtain,” “Bronx Music,” and “The Discovery Series,” with a specific focus on youth programming, comedy, the musical heritage of the Bronx, and exposure to wider global cultures. These longstanding traditions underscore Lehman Center’s historic role as one of the Bronx’s most important cultural institutions, dedicated to preserving and uplifting diverse artistic heritage for all.
Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. is supported, in part, by public funds through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council and the Bronx Delegation.
