Rising 15 feet above the bulkhead out at its far western end, Pier 64 and the two blocks of upland park from 24th Street to 26th Street opened in April 2009. The innovative design by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates was created to take advantage of Pier 64’s unique location at a bend in the Hudson River on an angle aligned with West 24th Street. The raised elevation capitalizes on this special geographic moment to provide even more spectacular views of the river and New York Harbor from both the north and the south. This entirely passive green recreational pier is characterized by sloping lawns and a grove of English Oaks that extends all the way up to 26th Street and west to the pierhead line.
