Beyond the Black Box in partnership with KEIGWIN + COMPANY & Triskelion Arts present The BBB Block Party! on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 1pm on Banker Street between Calyer Street & Meserole Avenue, Triskelion Arts’ Block, Greenpoint, Brooklyn 11222. The event is free and open to all! https://www.triskelionarts.org/spring-performances-2025/block-party
Rooted in our mission to champion Black artistry, radical imagination, and interdisciplinary performance, Beyond the Black Box (BBB) is transforming the block into a space of celebration, expression, and connection. This festival isn’t just about dance—it’s about making space where space hasn’t existed before. It’s about honoring the power of Black artistry in a neighborhood where our voices, our movement, and our culture are rarely centered.
Black artists have influenced the landscape of dance and performance, yet too often, we are left out of the spaces where art is funded, programmed, and celebrated. That’s why we’re showing up—boldly, joyfully, and unapologetically—to create something transformative. Through dance, music, and performance, we’re carving out room for culture, diversity, and creativity in a place where these voices deserve to shine.
With the support of KEIGWIN + COMPANY and Triskelion Arts, we’re turning the block into a stage, a dance floor, and a gathering space where culture, creativity, and community take center stage. And the best part? It’s completely FREE.
EVENT SCHEDULE
1pm: Festival Kickoff
1- 4pm: FREE Dance Classes for all levels
6pm: Breathwork Session
6:30–7:30pm: Performances
WHAT TO EXPECT:
FREE Dance Classes – Movement for everyone, guided by top instructors.
Vendor Market – Show love to Black-owned businesses, artists, and makers.
Sunset Performances – Multidisciplinary artists pushing creative boundaries.
This isn’t just a festival—it’s a movement. It’s an invitation to show up, take up space, and celebrate culture in a place where diversity should be more than an afterthought. Whether you’re here to dance, watch, learn, or simply feel the energy, this space is for you.
Join us as we make history—because the future of the arts includes all of us!
The BBB Block Party presented with KEIGWIN + COMPANY and Triskelion Arts is being generously supported by the Ford Foundation and in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and in partnership with the City Council.
About Beyond the Black Box
Beyond the Black Box (BBB) is an arts and cultural organization dedicated to amplifying Black voices, fostering connections, and educating through immersive experiences. Our mission is to celebrate, honor, and uplift the Black dance community by creating supportive spaces for artists to thrive. Motivated by a desire to address the lack of representation and support we encountered in our own journeys, we are committed to promoting inclusiveness, fairness, and visibility in the dance world.
BBB achieves its mission by producing dynamic multidisciplinary works, including live dance productions, community engagement initiatives, mentorship programs, and educational opportunities. Our approach seamlessly weaves together elements of popular culture with boundless enthusiasm, showcasing the remarkable accomplishments of our community.
With your support, BBB will continue to empower Black dancers and artists who champion social and political principles of inclusivity, fairness, and visibility, ultimately enriching the cultural tapestry of our community. Together, we will create a brighter future where Black voices are celebrated and heard through the transformative power of the arts.

About KEIGWIN + COMPANY (K+C)
Since K+C’s premiere performance at Joyce Soho in 2003, Artistic Director Larry Keigwin has created more than 40 dances. Keigwin works in partnership with his collaborators — dancers, filmmakers, artists — to develop dance inspired by his influences, from Broadway to architecture to dance. Since 2007, K+C has developed its community project Bolero in 16 communities, from NYC to Akron, and for the virtual platform with Bolero Juilliard, engaging more than 700 individuals in a creative process over the years.
Of Bolero, Gia Kourlas of The New York Times proclaimed: “Keigwin has made a dance about a community add up to more than a community dance.” For two decades, K+C has been presented in venues including The Joyce Theater, The Kennedy Center, Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, American Dance Festival, Vail International Dance Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, the Guggenheim Museum in NYC and Spain, and more.
Critics have described Keigwin’s artistry as both accessible and exhilarating – “Mr. Keigwin injects a revivifying dose of blithe high spirits into an often rather solemn art,” wrote Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times while Deborah Jowitt proclaimed in the Village Voice “I see Larry Keigwin as a mixologist: In his works, sweet seriousness, camp, and flash assert and mingle their flavors…his concoction goes down very smoothly indeed.”
In 2017, K+C expanded its reach through DanceMotion USA with a 4-week tour to Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, and Tunisia. As Covid-19 shifted dance online, K+C created acclaimed virtual works in 20/21, celebrating artistry and connection on the digital platform with high-profile commissions from The Juilliard School, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Works & Process at the Guggenheim, and YoungArts Foundation. Vogue heralded Bolero Juilliard, which brought together 100+ artists, as “One of the 9 Best Ballets to Come Out of Quarantine.”
As K+C moves into our third decade, the company will harness its long-standing capacity to engage and inspire through producing efforts that aim to invigorate communities and get everyone dancing and encouraging dance artists and entities whose work increases public access to dance, while extending the mission that has always been at the heart of K+C – bringing electrifying, joyful dance to the broadest possible audience – now in new ways.
About Triskelion Arts
trisk [verb]: the process of throwing ideas around & turning them into action.
Founded in 2000, Triskelion Arts is a Brooklyn-based organization dedicated to the growth and celebration of dance in NYC. Our programming, performance venue, and rehearsal studios support innovative dance artists at every stage of their creative journey, serving as an incubator for their artistic development. Through the transformative power of dance, we aim to enrich NYC’s cultural dialogue, inspire local audiences, and strengthen our community.
In our theater and in our studios, we actively cultivate an ecosystem where individuality is celebrated, artists are emboldened to share their authentic stories and kindness is the cornerstone of our interactions. We see ourselves as thought partners and collaborators, intentionally dismantling traditional institutional hierarchies to create a home for self-expression that amplifies diverse voices and prioritizes accessibility. With dance, we engage, connect, provoke thought, and catalyze meaningful systemic change.
Every step we take builds not just a stage but a platform for voices that need to be heard, a canvas for stories that need to be told, and a sanctuary for shared dreams.
