“Danny and the Deep Blue Sea”, John Patrick Shanley’s love story of two societal misfits opens this Fall at Theatre Under St. Marks. The cast features Equity actors Brian Patrick Murphy and Lisa Fernandez with Aimée Fortier directing.
Shanley’s Bronx tale opens in a deserted bar where Danny, a 29 year old truck driver given to violent rages, encounters Roberta, a 31 year old divorced mother who suffers terrible guilt from an incident involving her father that has made her mistrustful of men. Both are lonely, isolated and in desperate need of understanding. What begins as a bitter argument between them turns to compassion as each reveals the anguish, anger and despair they share about their individual circumstances. Roberta invites Danny to spend the night with her, and his lack of comprehension brings out her tenderness. During their night together they fantasize about the possibilities their new friendship might bring until morning when Roberta begins to doubt Danny’s capability for change…as well as her own.
