sarAika movement collective is excited to present Double Bind 2.0, a compelling evening- length contemporary dance performance that delves into the emotional complexities of womanhood, with a special focus on Latinx women’s history and their journey toward empowerment. This impactful performance will be featured at IATI Theater as part of the PAM Festival on October 13th, 2024, at 5:30 PM, located at 64 E 4th St, New York, NY 10003, during Hispanic Heritage Month.
Double Bind 2.0 is inspired by the concept of the “double bind,” an emotionally distressing predicament where conflicting messages create a no-win scenario. This condition, often rooted in misogyny, cultural gender stereotypes, and societal roles, forces women into difficult choices, leading to significant emotional distress and confusion. The performance explores how these double binds affect women, with a particular emphasis on themes from Latinx women’s history and their path to empowerment.
In this performance, braids are used as a powerful symbol of empowerment and self-discovery, representing a metaphorical escape route. Double Bind 2.0 portrays how women unite to assert their voices and foster hope for a brighter future. By translating these voices into dynamic and expressive movement, the work aims to deliver a universal message of equity, diversity, inclusivity, and human connection, resonating with all who identify with the experience of being a woman.
