The Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble will appear in rarely seen works by modern dance pioneer Anna Sokolow, as well as Valerie Bettis, Jim May, and guest choreographer Robert Cleary. Entitled “I’m not here to be polite” (from Anna Sokolow’s statement “I’m not here to be polite, I’m here to tell the truth”), the performance will feature the new generation of Sokolow dancers, joined by longtime Sokolow members Eleanor Bunker, Francesca Todesco and Luis Gabriel, with guest Daniel Fetecua. The program will feature Sokolow’s 1968 “Steps of Silence” and a reconstruction of her “Three Poems,” created in 1973 for the Juilliard dancers. Bunker will dance Valerie Bettis’s famed dramatic solo “The Desperate Heart.” By Jim May is his romantic duet “Sleeping Bouquet,” and guest choreographer Robert Cleary has been invited to set his provocative “This is Not America” for the Sokolow dancers.
