Leave it to a couple of feuding actors to spark the most deadly riot in New York City’s history.
Speaker Ralph Lewis’s animated telling of this pivotal moment in NYC history takes you back to 1849 during a time when actors were the media stars of the day and the city was in turmoil from rampant immigration and inequality. The forces that came together on that fateful night in May was prompted by a theatrical feud – who should play Macbeth? – but it really was a rich vs. poor class riot. The working class mobs of Five Points invaded the aristocratic enclave of Lafayette Place (Street) and the result was the unprecedented shooting by American soldiers of dozens of their fellow citizens, leading directly to the arming of American police forces.
This event takes place in the historic landmark Colonnade Row: New York’s History Salon. Seating is strictly limited to 30 seats!
