CHESS MEETS THE COLD DESCENT: DIAMOND MESH INC. ANNOUNCES “THE SILLY WILLIAM GAMBIT” MAIN STAGE PREMIERE

Part of “The Manifestival Mainstage Series”
Run: July 16 – August 9: Thurs – Sat @ 6:15 PM | Sun @ 5:45 PM

NEW YORK, NY — Did we only come to realize one day that something was missing? Or did we lose it somewhere along the way? Was there nothing we could have done?

You did not stumble upon these questions. You found them. Just like you found this. And we are here to tell you—this is what you have been searching for.

This summer, Diamond Mesh Incorporated expands its rule over the New York counter-culture theater scene with the highly anticipated return of The Silly William Gambit. Landing a coveted spot on “The Manifestival Mainstage Series,” this dark, whimsical production is described as The Queen’s Gambit meets Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. It is a high-concept theatrical puzzle where every spoken word is bound to the physics of the chessboard.

The Synopsis: Checkmate or Eternal Damnation

He’s not playing chess against Death. He’s playing against something far worse…

The Silly William Gambit follows eccentric chess prodigy Silly William, who finds himself trapped on a train bound straight for hell (or Philadelphia, as it is known in some circles). When the train’s mysterious owner, the elusive Bum Fiddler, challenges him to a high-stakes duel, Silly William must play for his ultimate survival.

The entire production unfolds across seven rapid-fire chess matches, projected onto a massive backdrop in real time. In a staggering feat of performance art, every single line of dialogue corresponds directly to an actual chess move played on the board.

Whether you are an active Grandmaster or have never touched a pawn, star, playwright, and real-world chess theorist Matt Bader invites you to discover a dark fable based on a legitimate, legal chess gambit he invented himself.

Critically Acclaimed Virtuosity
Fresh off a celebrated developmental track, the production has already earned intense praise for its hyper-specific, beautifully bizarre intersection of subcultures.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “An audience which appreciates both chess and wacky theatre may not be that easy to find. But if you’re in that segment of life’s Venn diagram, you absolutely shouldn’t miss this show.” — The Wee Review
“Bader doesn’t merely explain chess—he inhabits it… [He] makes the stage very much his own and is adept at leaping from one side to the other, giving the words physical force and focus.” — Fringe Review (Recommended Show) / Bob Kane
The Underground Dream Team
Directed by Justin Jager (co-creator of piss.jpg), the production relies on a razor-sharp technical execution to keep the real-time board projections in perfect sync with the live performance:

Starring/Written by: Matt Bader
Lighting Design: Sara Hansen (Carving the stark geometric lines of the board)
Sound Design: Ethan Lawrence (Crafting the rhythmic, mechanical anxiety of the train)
Stage Manager: Abigail Alderman
Produced by: Diamond Mesh Inc.

The Manifestival: Open Call for Disruptive Theater
The Silly William Gambit serves as a cornerstone anchor for Diamond Mesh Incorporated’s massive summer festival footprint, conquering the NYC circuit from July 16th to August 9th, 2026.
