Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) sends sincere congratulations to TRU member Brent Buell and the success of A24’s movie, Sing Sing, released in August 2024. Mr. Buell, a playwright, producer, director and novelist, is a collaborator and co-producer on the film.
Sing Sing is based on his experience directing theater in New York’s maximum-security prisons and his creating the play “Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code,” described as a kind of historical musical revue,
for the incarcerated individuals in his program. The play premiered inside Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, New York.
In Buell’s own words: “When I decided to add producing to my directing career, TRU was there from day one providing education, support and community. I was mentored by Jane Dubin and Cheryl Wiesenfeld in a way that remains invaluable to this day. Whatever new challenges arose, I knew I could call knowledgeable people, including very much Bob Ost. I met people from every walk of theater life at TRU and began to build the kind of friendships that are both a joy and crucial to success. When I was brought on board with A24’s movie, Sing Sing, as a collaborator as well as a co-producer, I had gotten the education and experience needed to step into those roles with confidence. I don’t know of any other theater organization that has the breadth and depth that TRU provides year after year. I’m very grateful and proud to tell people that I am a TRU friend.”
