A dependable haven for artists in isolation, Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) is now in its fourth year of non-stop weekly Community Gatherings this Friday, having offered to date over 200 conversations and unlimited camaraderie since April 17, 2020. TRU hosts their Community Gatherings every Friday at 5pm ET via Zoom, to explore the creation of art and theater in the time of COVID-19, and to ensure that these crucial conversations continue going forward as theater reopens.
4/19 – How to Make an Effective Documentary (and Win a Few Emmys). In the room: Susan Handman, creator and narrator for NYC Media, an award-winning series created with the New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, and a winner of 10 Local NYC Emmys. We’ll look at the dramatic structure needed for any work of art to engage an audience and talk about the specifics of the documentary and its many forms. At its heart, is the documentary simply a specific form of storytelling? Is it more narrative than dramatic? How much creative license can a filmmaker exercise in telling what is generally a factual record of a real person, place or event? What skills can a theater artist bring to this related art form?
