Tyshawn Sorey’s new 40-minute piano work, For Julius Eastman, receives its world premiere on this concert by acclaimed pianist Sarah Rothenberg, who is also the Artistic Director of the Houston-based presenting/producing organization DACAMERA. Rothenberg’s deep musical relationship with Sorey grew out of their work together on the composer’s Monochromatic Light (Afterlife), a DACAMERA-Rothko Chapel commission. In this expansive new solo piece, Sorey’s signature intensity and hypersensitivity to sound resonate with Rothenberg’s pianism, delving into profound emotional depths and upending our perception of time.
The program also features Sorey performing After ‘The King of Denmark,’ his tribute to Morton Feldman’s study in quiet timbres for solo percussion.
