See a preview of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s new season of legacy in motion as they prepare to raise the curtain on a new era under the leadership of artistic director Alicia Graf Mack. A star performer on the Ailey stage between 2005 and 2014, she was brought into the company and mentored by the incomparable Judith Jamison. Following her renowned career as a dancer and distinguished tenure as an educator, Ms. Graf Mack is now leading AILEY into the next exciting chapter in its nearly seven decade history, guided as ever by Alvin Ailey’s pioneering legacy.
Acclaimed dancers from the company will perform highlights sampling repertory from the upcoming New York City Center holiday engagement from December 3 – January 4, which ranges from new productions of works by Alvin Ailey and Judith Jamison to season world premieres of Embrace by Earl Mosley and The Holy Blues by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Samantha Figgins and Chalvar Monteiro. Alicia Graf Mack will lead conversations with the choreographers of the premieres, as well as with Associate Artistic Director Matthew Rushing.
Following the performance, Ailey Extension director Lisa Johnson-Willingham and West African dance instructor Maguette Camara lead a dance class in the rotunda open to all. Accompanied by an ensemble of drummers, the class will culminate in a group dance and includes an opportunity to learn steps from Alvin Ailey’s must-see masterpiece Revelations.
Ticket purchase includes admission to the Rotunda Dance Party with Ailey Extension at 8PM, in collaboration with the Guggenheim’s Member Mondays.
