Review: The Sister Rosettas

1375544808On Friday night, I made a trip to the IRT Theater, a small venue on the third-floor of the old Archive Building in Greenwich Village.  It's a cool set up with a casual vibe: most audience members watched the show with alcoholic beverages in hand, and there was extra seating on stage, right next to the performers.

I was there to see "The Sister Rosettas".  The show had been billed as a rock-caberet theatrical experience, but after a warm-up act (Christopher Gabriel Nunez) that was only lukewarm, I didn't really know what to expect from the main act.

I shouldn't have worried.  The band walked out, and Diana Oh started telling the story of how she joined the band, which led into the first song of the evening, “Tiger”. As soon as the song started, I fell in love with all of it. Oh's vocals were electrifying and the rest of the group (Eric Miranda and Kole Smith on guitar, Matt Harrington on percussion, and Philippe Arman on bass) were talented musicians.  Arman has a beautiful falsetto that will make you swoon, and the entire band exudes and aura of cool.  As the new frontwoman of The Sister Rosettas (a.k.a. Ming Dynasty), Diana Oh did not disappoint. Fun and unpredictable, she lit up the stage with her impressive stage presence: her antics included inviting someone in the audience to play the tambourine for her, taking her clothes off and throwing them at a “hot guy” in the audience, and dancing around on stage.

The mixture of storytelling and songs was enjoyable: it opened up the crazy world of The Sister Rosettas to all of us in the audience, and what a fun and crazy world it was. With humor, love, openness, and (of course) rock, their set had me wanting to get up and dance alongside Oh.

The opening act of "The Sister Rosettas" rotates, and while I'm not an expert in the area of stand up, Christopher Gabriel Nunez struck me as an odd choice. While his set included some funny jokes, it was all over the place and, at times, a bit preachy. I found out after the show, though, that this was Nunez's first outing as a stand up comedian -- so I'm sure he'll tighten up his routine as he gains more experience.

All in all, I really enjoyed The Sister Rosettas show. If you are looking for a fun night of music and rock then get out and see their show: you will not be disappointed.
