On April 1, sketch groups Business Computer and Hot Buffet teamed up to bring a full 90 minutes of comedy to the Secret Theater. The two teams both brought their A-games to the Long Island City space and played to their ensembles’ strengths.
Up first was Hot Buffet, who served up their sketches with a hefty seasoning of excellent bad wigs and thrift store fashions. The group is mostly female, and their comedy made great use of the dynamic among the funny ladies. The first sketch had three women doing a choreographed strip routine while wearing full winter weather gear (coats, sweaters, scarves, gloves, etc.); when they finally were down to their long johns, the lap dances they gave the man (a special guest star Daniel Florio, who filled in admirably) included vapor rub, tissues, and shivering hugs for warmth. This first scene was hilarious and completely wordless.
Hot Buffet's comfort with silences proved important during some tech glitches later in the performance that left one performer stranded. Fortunately, the performers were able to come back from any awkwardness between scenes by physically embodying a wide array of characters (with the help of the aforementioned wigs and costumes!) such as Civil War vets playing a Buzzfeed-like quiz, two lonely sommeliers who appeared to be from an early-90s public access show, and a male gynecologist/mystic. While some of the skits did not finish as strongly as their potential warranted, each delivered a fair share of laughs.
Where Hot Buffet derived its humor from its characters, Business Computer won the audience over with their manic energy and zany concepts. The tone was set right away with their opening sketch, where at a surprise birthday party one of the men punched a hole through a cardboard wall, only to then come out the other side of the stage through another cardboard wall bleeding and screaming, “Happy skull-prise!” Other highlights of the show included a skit about three male Best Buy employees obsessed with “The Carrie Diaries” and the epic love-saga of two homosexual rats. Like “Hot Buffet”, a few of their scenes were unable to stick a landing -- one running gag about a married couple needed a couple of more jokes -- but their physical commitment to the bits helped them to recover from any false steps.
You can catch Hot Buffet and Business Computer separately at various locations around the city. Hot Buffet’s next show will be on April 18th at The PIT and Business Computer can be seen at Parkside Lounge, also on April 18th.
