Detailed Information:

The 92nd Street Y, New York announces a screening of the new film Through Memory, directed by dance filmmaker Tobin Del Cuore. Through Memory explores the rich dance heritage of 92NY while chronicling acclaimed choreographer Aszure Barton’s creative process with Limón Dance Company as they bring the new work Join to life, in preparation for its world premiere is at 92NY on May 21 and 22 as part of the Harkness Dance Center’s 2024/25 season-closing program with Limón Dance Company. The screening – followed by a talkback with Del Cuore, Barton, Jody Arnhold and Dante Puleio – is in person at 92NY on Thursday, May 22 at 2 pm and tickets are available at https://www.92ny.org/event/through-memory.

Three compelling narratives intertwine in Through Memory: 92NY as a crucible of American modern dance, the enduring legacy of Limón Dance Company, and Barton’s intimate journey of artistic creation. By excavating layers of choreographic memory, the film illuminates how artistic legacies endure and transform, tracing the Limón Company’s evolution from its groundbreaking origins to its vibrant contemporary practice. Join was co-commissioned by the 92nd Street Y, New York as part of the 150th anniversary celebration, in honor and continued support of José Limón’s rich 92NY legacy.

“Through Memory is a love letter to the dance community I have been a part of for twenty-five years,” comments Del Cuore. “It feels as though my parallel careers in dance and film have been leading up to this very moment.”

Limón Dance Company founder José Limón and 92NY’s modern dance history dates back to the 1930s; Limón performed here with the iconic Doris Humphrey, among others and their program on May 21 and 22 includes generation-defining choreography by both Limón and Humphrey, along with Barton’s new work. Tickets for the performances are available at https://www.92ny.org/event/limon-dance-company.
