When I heard about this show, I had a feeling it would be fun and cute – and I wasn’t disappointed. “Those Girls” consists of four bright, bubbly and super-talented ladies who are veteran cabaret performers. Each of them brings a wit and charm to the stage, and together they blend both musically and comedically for a highly entertaining show.
As described during the performance, much of this show is an outgrowth of a workshop led by the show's director/arranger, Lennie Watts. The “Girls” started experimenting with alternate versions of modern songs, later deciding to form this harmony group. The results are impressive. I was doubtful about yet another cabaret take on a “Donna Summer Medley”, but the team was smart enough to use each lady’s personality to make it work. Other wild combinations included blending Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” with Heart’s “Barracuda” (to make “JoleneAcuda”!), and a beautiful, slowed-down version of Annie Lennox’s song “Walking on Broken Glass”.
Many modern day songs were given a jazz-swing rendition, but not all. Some were just straightforward alternate versions. But what made them all successful was the really well placed blending of these ladies' voices. When they spread out into harmonies it often gave chills of excitement.
Kudos also goes to Steven Ray Watkins (Musical Director, Co-Arranger, Pianist) for his excellent work - along with the musicians of the evening, Matt Scharfglass on bass and David Silliman on drums.
The verdict: If you get the chance, go see “Those Girls” next time they play - you won’t be disappointed!
“Those Girls” are Eve Eaton, Rachel Hanser, Karen Mack and Wendy Russell.
