Review: New York Nightingales’ “Salute the Troops!” at Feinstein’s/54 Below

Nightingales

Who doesn’t like the Andrews Sisters? There have been many three-girl vocal groups since, and the newest on the scene is the New York Nightingales, with a really fun throwback USO type of show that played Memorial Day called “Salute the Troops!”.  The three ladies, Hope Jarman, Jennifer Mergele, and Tia Andriani, are charming, sexy, funny and great to listen to. Not only do they have great voices, but they have inventive little comedic bits and choreographed moves that keep on entertaining.

Along with the three leading ladies was an amazing lineup of guest stars:

Allyson Briggs (from Fleur Seule) did a wonderful rendition of “Get Happy"/"Happy Days are Here Again” with the Nightingales doing backup. This was the special part of the show, all the guests were supported by the girls and their fantastic arrangements and vocals. Ms. Briggs also did a solo of “Murder, He Says” which brought down the house.

Jordan Fife Hunt danced and sang up a storm with “Gotta Dance” and Stacy Lee Tilton was a real treat doing an amped up version of “How Ya Gonna Keep ‘Em Down on the Farm” along with the Nightingales. Kyle Scatliffe (The Color Purple) came on with a joke about his height (he is nearly twice as tall as the Nightingales!) and charmed us with “There’s Nothing Like a Dame”.

The biggest treat was John Kemp-Edwards' version of “Pennies From Heaven”.  When Mr. Edwards comes on stage, it’s one of those “Wow” moments. He has terrific energy and stage presence, with a voice that simply blows you away with its deep rich tones, beautiful high notes and everything in-between. Everything about him performing this song was impressive, including the reworked arrangement (All arrangements are by the Nightingales). This is definitely a future star in the making.

Also, let’s not forget the host of the evening, Chaplain John R. Sheenan, who has a great knack for making cheesy USO jokes work. He was terrific fun and a great host.

Overall, it was a wonderful show filled with comedy, great music and novel arrangements.  If you get the chance to catch the Nightingales in the future - go!
