Once a month, the traveling Wasabassco Hellfire Club makes its way to the East Village's Kraine Theatre for an evening of burlesque entertainment. If you are ever in the area, it is worth heading over to check out.
This intimate theatre, called the Red Room, is on the building's first floor (the second floor hosts the Soviet-themed KGB Bar, where you can stop in for a drink during intermission). Once there, you will be greeted by the hostess, Lauren Liberman -- who carries a black leather whip as she hands out performance menus, just in case you misbehave.
The show opens with a woman in bed with her back to the audience. Suddenly, well-manicured hands appear, sliding sensuously up her back and over her hips. The two women have, it seems, just finished making love: they step out of bed completely nude, slowly gathering their clothes discarded across the stage. They dress -- exchanging clothes they’ve mistakenly put on that belong to the other woman -- and then kiss and depart.
This is just the first scene of many: those that follow are performed by several different strippers, performers, and dancers, each with a unique and unusual act. In one of the most provocative acts, a woman makes a gin and vermouth Martini by using only her butt and thighs -- as James Bond would say, it is "shaken, not stirred." Throughout the evening, the petite Amanda Whip performs the roles of both House Girl and stage manager, as she moves furniture and picks up discarded costumes after each erotic routine.
There may not be any playbills handed out, but there's plenty else to look at. So go and enjoy -- it’s a hoot!
