South Street Seaport Museum presents Greater Gotham, a Book Talk by Mike Wallace

The South Street Seaport Museum presents Greater Gotham on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 6:30pm at 213 Water Street, NYC. Tickets are $10 (free for members) or $40 for admission and a copy of the book. Tickets are available at https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/969741.

Mike Wallace discusses his new book, Greater Gotham, the continuation to the Pulitzer Prize winning Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898. A reception will follow the book talk.

Greater Gotham, written by Gotham co-author Mike Wallace, takes up the story of the juggernaut created by municipal consolidation in 1898 and now hurtling headlong into the 20th century. This new volume gives us New York on a whole new scale, moving from national to global prominence, driven by restless ambition, political turmoil, immigrant hopes, and Wall Street capital, aspiring to be the biggest and best at everything-to control every aspect of the country's cultural and commercial life and, by the end of World War One, to overtake London as the financial capital of the world. Greater Gothamcaptures the explosive energy generated by the resulting collisions: between plutocrats and progressives; Tammany pols and determined reformers; labor leaders and industry thugs; the embedded Anglo-Protestant elite and brash ethnic newcomers.

"[An] eloquent sequel... Wallace's dynamic contribution to urban history focuses on the marginalised and working class as well as the top one-percent, expanding our vision of the past in innumerable ways."
- Jane Ciabattari, BBC Culture

Mike Wallace is Distinguished Professor of History at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is the founder of the Gotham Center for New York City History. He is the co-author of Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for History. Wallace lives with his wife, the Mexican writer Carmen Boullosa, in Brooklyn and Coyoacán.
