Those seeking an evening of bawdy entertainment will certainly get a laugh out of The Horse Trade Theater Group’s double-header presentation of “Shocks with C*cks: All Dude, All Nude Revue” and “Shocks WITHOUT C*cks: All Nude, No Dude Revue”, both part of their “5th Annual Winter Burlesque Blitz.” These shows are strictly adults only, yet for the most part, have a twisted wholesomeness that is bound to make even the most puritanical prig chuckle.
While the show focuses on striptease, MC Johnny Porkpie’s sense of humor and rapport with his audience really minimize the less savory aspects of some of the performances. And as for the performances themselves, except for one or two low points of unspeakable vulgarity, they are overall witty and interesting. Included among them is a nude magician who ignites a saturated torch with different body parts while holding an electricity conducting wand. One of the high points (or perhaps low points, depending on your seat) was watching Rose Wood do the infamous bottle dance and then after drinking from the bottle, spray the front rows with a mouthful of god-knows-what. Miss Rose Wood, by the way, vomited on Susan Sarandon at The Box a few years ago. If you can stomach this sort of thing, the rest of the show will have you laughing out loud.
The success of the show can partly be attributed to the brevity of each act. In this way they never become monotonous or depraved. Overall, the shows strike just the right tone of épater le bourgeois and hilarity. At the same time, some of the performers' bodies are incredibly beautiful and for some, this will make the show worth seeing.
