The New York International Fringe Festival will bring 200 shows to NYC from August 12-28. We spoke with Molly Miller (book/lyrics) about Tribulation: The Musical.

What was the first musical that made you want to make musicals?

I’ve wanted to play Ebony ever since I saw Les Misérables live when I was seven years old and I’ve seen it ten times since then. That’s the play that made me fall in love with musical theater.

Tell us about your show in 3 sentences or less.

Tribulation: The Musical follows Genevieve (Sarah Hoffman), a would-be poet who ends up at a crappy desk job after she realizes that being left behind in the Rapture doesn't mean rent isn't due.

Describe the sound of your musical, it's like _______ meets _________

Top 40s pop meets Book of Mormon.

Who is your favorite classic musical theater composer? And your favorite composer working today?

Favorite classic music theater composer is definitely Stephen Sondheim, and working today is Tim Minchin who is the composer and lyricist for Matilda the Musical.

Why is it important to bring your show to Fringe?

We wanted to bring Tribulation to Fringe to get a broader audience and to expose the Chicago comedic musical theater talent to New York and vice versa.

What's next for the show?

We would love to do a run in New York or possibly tour.
