A critical and commercial hit for the Public Theater, the David Byrne/Fatboy Slim musical, “Here Lies Love”, would ordinarily be a ready candidate for a commercial transfer, perhaps even to Broadway. But the piece, which employs an immersive staging that has audiences standing throughout, can’t simply move to a traditional theater space.
As such, producers were casting about for a location that could house the tuner, which tells the life story of Philippine First Lady (and shoe enthusiast) Imelda Marcos. Songs in the show, which echoes a club atmosphere, include “Walk Like a Woman”, “Dancing Together” and “Why Don’t You Love Me?”.
A few weeks ago, the Public had settled on a basement space in midtown’s Hotel Pennsylvania, with plans to open in early winter. However, the New York Times reported today that plans have fallen through for that space as well as for a movie theater on Second Avenue.
A new venue is being sought for the show, which began as a concept album and then played at the Public’s home space this past spring. Meanwhile, the show’s director, Alex Timbers, is busy readying “Rocky” for the Winter Garden Theater in the spring.
