FringeNYC Review: Serial: The Parody!

Funny, well-acted and relying a little heavily on over-the-top humor, Serial: The Parody! puts a wacky spin on the popular podcast by Sarah Koenig, which reopened the details of the 1999 Adnan Syed case in which Syed was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee despite little evidence.

In order to fully appreciate Serial: The Parody!, audience members will need to listen to the original Serial podcast all the way through, because the parody assumes the viewer knows most of the major and minor players in Adnan Syed's case. This 45-minute performance, directed by Jessica Kane, begins the same way the podcast does, with Sarah Koenig (Brandi Bravo) waxing poetically à la Carrie Bradshaw about Syed's case. Bravo, who co-wrote the script with Olga Elliot, nails the tone and cadence of Koenig's speech, and her gestures are authentic and realistic. But soon the parody twists, introducing us to Adnan (Aldo Uribe), Koenig's almost always shirtless boyfriend, and Matthew McConaughey (Olga Elliot) in True Detective mode, with whom Koenig meets to get advice on Adnan's case. Koenig also tries to connect with Jay (Jonathan Braylock), the other suspected killer in Hae Min Lee's case who got off scot-free.  As the show goes on, everything becomes more over the top. The playwright and actress Olga Elliot switches costumes and roles constantly and with ease; each character has a completely different voice and mannerisms.

Without a doubt, everyone in this show from the writers to the actors are talented and energetic. At time the story does become too wacky, such as one of the characters Elliot plays, an old woman who can speak to the dead -- it feels too unrelated to Serial and draws the audience out of the world Kane, Bravo and Elliot have built. Still, Serial: The Parody! does have many funny moments, especially Elliot's Matthew McConaughey impression and Braylock's deranged Best Buy speeches. These New York-based comedians are definitely ones to watch.
