FringeNYC Interview: Aaron Michael Krueger on “SUPER!”

SUPER16-4519

The New York International Fringe Festival will bring 200 shows to NYC from August 12-28. We spoke with Aaron Michael Krueger about the musical SUPER!

What was the first musical that made you want to make musicals?

The first musical that really inspired me to write was Rent because Jonathan Larson's book and score were accessible and exciting in a way that I hadn't experienced before being introduced to the show.

Tell us about your show in 3 sentences or less.

SUPER! is a musical about a young man with extraordinary powers who must become the superhero the world needs him to be.

Describe the sound of your musical.

It's like rock music meets your favorite superhero movie score.

Who is your favorite classic musical theatre composer? And your favorite composer working today?

I'm a big fan of Charles Strouse. There's a timeless, engaging quality about the scores to shows like Bye, Bye Birdie and It's a Bird, It's a Plane... that I never get tired of listening to. As for a favorite composer today, I really love Tom Kitt's work. Next To Normal is stunning and High Fidelity never gets old.

Why is it important to bring your show to Fringe?

The show has undergone a lot of changes since the last time it was put up in a festival, so I think it's important to see how the new incarnation of the show reads (and hopefully resonates) with an audience. I also think Fringe is a wonderful opportunity for new writers and composers to have a voice and an audience that actually wants to listen to them. It's a chance to feel like your work is being embraced by the theatre community as opposed to the normal rejection that a lot of emerging writers face.

What's next for the show?

While I would love to say, "The Great White Way," I believe the next step for us is to continue workshopping the show and allowing it to grow.
