On November 1st, Broadway's finest will get together to honor Tony and Oscar winner Joel Grey with the very first annual Humane Society of New York's Sandy Award presented to an artist who has shown commitment to the cause of animal rights. The event set to take place at Feinstein's/54 Below will feature performances by Sutton Foster, Annaleigh Ashford, Michael Arden, Orfeh and Robert Fairchild among others. Musical direction will be under the magical hand of Seth Rudetsky, who took some time to answer some questions we had about the event and also to share a picture of the adorable Mandy (left).

What are some of the songs you will include in the lineup?

I don't want to give anything away, but I will say that Sutton Foster has written new lyrics to a song for an amazing homage to her dog. It's  appropriately a song from Cabaret!

Is it easy for you to come up with a song selection, considering the countless possibilities you have,  and given the rich careers of the performers and honorees?

I am obsessed with certain singers voices, so I love coming up with songs that specifically highlight what I think is amazing about each one (AKA there'll be lots of belting).

What are your personal favorite Joel Grey performances?

You truly cannot top Cabaret. So entertaining, yet so creepy yet such great placement on the high notes!

Congrats on your new book. How do you find the time to do so much?

I feel like everything I do takes around an hour a day....instead of 8 hours on one job, I do 8 hours on 8 jobs!

How can our readers help The Humane Society?

Many ways! Spread the word that all the trained animals on Broadway are from a shelter. They are the extremely trainable and loving animals! Never buy a pet! There are so many that live in cages because they want a loving home. And spay and neuter! And tell other people to spay and neuter! ASAP!
