Review: Sleep Well

Sleep Well is a short, one-man show about one man's strange night with his even stranger roommate. Glynn Borders, writer, producer, performer and director, right away tells the audience, "This is a show about weird shit." He does not disappoint.

Borders does not have a powerful voice, but a clear, rhythmic one which pulls listeners in as he describes his roommate Dillard, a possible narcoleptic with a possessed ex-girlfriend. As Dillard, his voice is a combination of hippies Dr. Teeth from the Muppets and Leo from That '70s Show.  The two roommates reenact a strange night they spent getting high, sitting in the dark of a blackout and freaking themselves out over a cat in the window. Once they leave the living room the really "weird shit" starts happening.

The show is short but pretty funny, most of the laughs caused by Borders' melodramatic expressions and imitations of various characters. The story itself isn't anything too scary or sad or even mind-blowing. But it's entertaining and after hearing it you will thank your stars that you didn't live with Borders and Dillard.

Herbie Quinones also directs.

Sleep Well playing at Dorothy Strelsin Theatre as part of the Midtown International Theatre Festival on Saturday, Aug 2. More more information on MITF productions, click here.
