Pop Talk With Great Good Fine OK
20130221 Great Good Fine Ok Shoot-5
Luke Moellman and Jon Sandler of Great Good Fine OK

Combining dream-like synth notes with infectious beats, the guys from Great Good Fine OK should pretty much just change their name to Awesome (pardon the cheesy joke). They broke onto the scene in 2013 with their delirious "You're the One for Me", and with just two official singles released so far (the equally great "Not Going Home" being the other one) they're one of those very rare bands whose music just leaves you craving for more. We caught up with lead singer Jon Sandler who talked about their upcoming tour with Betty Who, playing for audiences who haven't heard of them before and how New York influences their music.

I saw you open for Tove Lo a few months ago and was surprised when I realized the opening band actually kicked ass! I noticed a very select group of people who were singing along with you and wondered how did they know all the songs already. How is it for you to play for people who have absolutely no idea of who you are?

First off, Thank you! We love playing for people who have no idea who we are! We started this band less than a year ago, so chances are, most people are not familiar with us. That’s what makes this time so exciting for us - we get to watch as fans are born. We feel lucky that so far we have been shown so much love by people all over the country.

The band started almost by chance, as you went from meeting through friends and then running into each other months later, had you been working on your own music in those months? If so, how did that music effect your work together?

I had been working on my own solo project since I was about 10, and especially during the past 5 years, so in every moment before we wrote the first song together, my mind was on other songs. It was the same with Luke and everything he was writing, mixing and producing. We both had very busy lives before we collaborated, and we truly believe that everything we had ever done before that moment was vital in giving us the skill set and mind frame to tackle that first song and become GGFO.

In your live show you make a great use of space and interact with all the instruments. And I have to ask, how did you end up using an electric marimba (is that what that even is?) in your songs?

It’s called a MalletKAT and Luke had always wanted one. He is a trained and very talented vibraphone player and was psyched to be able to have a midi-controlled mallet instrument to execute all the unique sounds that we use in our songs. It works and looks really great for the music and show we are trying to create.

"You're the One For Me" was such a critical hit in the blogosphere, that I have to wonder has it set the standard for what we can expect from you musically? Or will your next songs be completely different?

We are actually in the process of writing and recording songs for a full-length album, so I can tell you with certainty that you can expect an extremely dynamic range of music! The songs will absolutely sound like GGFO, but we are experimenting with some awesome and different sounds.

You've expressed your admiration for pop artists like Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson. Considering how pop is more often than not thought of as a guilty pleasure in snob circles, did you ever go through a punk or hard rock phase as teenagers? And how did you end realizing you wanted to make pop records?

I have written pop songs my whole life. Some much poppier than others, but would classify almost everything I have written as “Pop.” It’s what has always come naturally to me, and I do love how relatable it can be to so many people. I like the idea of bringing people together around a song. I know Luke has worked on songs with a much broader spectrum. However, we are both huge fans of artists within every genre. I don’t think one could write successful pop songs without a vast knowledge of music history and other genres, artists and styles.

What would you say is the effect of NYC in your music?

NYC is perfect for inspiration. It is a place chock full of extremes – It is, all at once, the richest, poorest, fanciest, dirtiest, smelliest, hottest, coldest, craziest, most mellow and most beautiful place in the world. I can’t imagine writing as many songs as I have in the past 10 years without the force of NYC and Brooklyn specifically.

You're going on tour with Betty Who. Considering how much you dance in your shows, have you attempted doing the dance from the "Somebody Loves You" Home depot viral video?

I have not yet attempted that dance! It is now on my to-do list.

How excited are you about going on this tour?

We couldn’t be more excited to tour with Betty Who! We feel very lucky that our first real tour is with an artist who we love and respect so much.

Besides Betty Who and Tove Lo, what are some new bands you guys are into?

Honestly, we’ve been listening to older stuff lately – Janet Jackson, Chic, Prince...

Any word on when we can expect the album?

An EP is coming in September and a full length in 2015. Buckle up!
