Interview: Perez Hilton on Playing Danny Tanner/Bob Saget in “Full House! The Musical!”

full-house-musical-03Perez Hilton is what you might call a Jack of All Trades for the Internet age. A pioneer in the world of blogging through his eponymous dot com, he’s been supporting and skewering pop culture for over a decade. That’s why he seems the perfect, deliciously notorious casting choice to play beloved Full House patriarch Danny Tanner -- and his dark alter ego Bob Saget -- in the raunchy Full House! The Musical!, onstage now at Theatre 80. Tucked away on St. Marks, this National Lampoon production is taking its commitment to eye-rolling, button pushing, way-out-there comedy seriously. By way of an introduction to the musical, perhaps we can let the show’s disclaimer speak for itself: “Due to strong language and no redeemable life lessons this show is not suggested for anyone under 16 or over 100.” But hey, if you fall in the appropriate audience age, this may be one of the few productions on stage now in NYC where it isn’t merely acceptable to boo, hiss, cheer, and wolf-whistle -- it’s encouraged. In between sound checks and dance practice, we caught up with Hilton, who gave us a peek behind the curtain.

First, can you talk a little bit about how you got involved with this project?

My friend Jason Wise is the choreographer and co-director of the show, and as soon as they announced it, I shamelessly began campaigning for a role - and it worked!

You went to school for acting, and you’ve been in television and film, but do you have a background in theater? What drew you at this moment to accept a theatrical role?

I've done theater many times before, beginning in high school. I did NEWSical Off-Broadway in 2012 and had such a magical time! It reminded me why I love the stage so much! It's been a few years since then, and I really wanted to do a show again, and I knew this one would be fun and good! And it has been and is!

Could you talk a little bit about how the show has developed as you’ve worked on it? Did you and your fellow actors help collaborate on the comedy? Has the show grown much since it started?

The show has changed a lot! Songs cut! Jokes added! And, thankfully, Tobly and Bob [McSmith] give us the freedom to be loose with it and make new choices nightly. That keeps it fresh and extra fun!

Hot-On-The-Street-Perez-Hilton-Full-House-The-MusicalWhat was the biggest challenge of the role for you?

Just getting it done amidst all the other things I do daily, not the least of which is raising two children.

Something pretty unique about this show is how intimate it is - from a small cast to a cozy theater - and the audience is really encouraged to interact with performance and let loose a bit. Because of these factors, do you find that with this show in particular, it changes from night to night based on the audience?

It's sooooo different one performance from the next! That's why people need to come more than once! And then some more!

In your career, you’ve shown that you love pushing the limits and being occasionally outrageous -- did you find yourself drawn to this project because of its controversial humor? Do you think there’s a freedom in theater to be a little edgier, and do you think we need to see more of that -- both in the arts and in the world at large?

Honestly, I was drawn to this show because I trusted Tobly and Bob. I saw their previous shows and knew they would get this right. Also, the original show is still such a hot commodity - there's a reboot coming! - and I knew me playing Danny Tanner would get me a lot of press. Like we're doing right now! Winning!
