The 2016 New York Musical Festival, which runs July 11 through August 7, will bring audiences four full weeks of new musicals, concerts, readings, and panel discussions. We spoke with Geoff Davin, creator of The First Church of Mary, The Repentant Prostitute's FIFTH ANNUAL Benefit Concert, Revival, and Pot Luck Dinner.
What was the first musical that made you want to make musicals?
HAIR. When I was a child I staged productions of it using my sister's Barbie and Ken dolls...complete with the nude scene!
Describe the sound of your musical:
It's like Hedwig and the Angry Inch meets Pump Boys and Dinettes.
What's your dish of choice to bring to potluck dinners?
I make a DAMN good dark chocolate pumpkin bread pudding that I'm pretty darn proud of. I'm one of those annoying pumpkin lovers. Don't judge me!!
Why is it important to bring your show to NYMF?
I premiered the show in Nashville, TN in May of 2015...which is where I currently reside. So I'm really excited to open the show up to a new city and new audiences.
What's next for the show?
Well...I guess we'll be moving the show STRAIGHT to Broadway early next season. I mean, right? Isn't that how this works? I heard that most shows end up moving to Broadway. Sooooo.....yup! Broadway, I guess. Definitely Broadway.
