If you’re looking for humor that's edgy and unapologetic, you'll find it in Dan Mazer’s new film “I Give It A Year”. The film depicts a relationship between two people who are in no way meant for one another, played by Australian actress Rose Byrne and British actor Rafe Spall.
But don’t go into this anti-romantic comedy expecting relationship advice; when asked about the secret to keeping a marriage alive, Mazer says, "it's about a marriage that fails, so this is not necessarily the answer you're looking for." The only advice I got for a lasting relationship after speaking with the cast was to lie, cheat, and work out. “I feel ill-equipped to advise anybody just yet,” says Rose Byrne. “Make sure you keep in shape…NY is a pretty hard city for dating, but I think every big city is like that, just because everyone is so driven for work, rather than their personal life.”
Byrne said she was a little apprehensive of director Dan Mazer ("Borat", "Bruno") pulling her out of her comfort zone. “There’s something about comedy that you really have to get unhinged to make it work and you go in with your best intentions, but inevitably you want to get the laugh.” After seeing her performance in the wildly successful "Bridesmaids", Mazer chose Byrne as his top-choice lead actress as he began writing "I Give It A Year". "Luckily enough she responded to the script, she laughed, and the rest is cinematic history," Mazer says. "I enjoy awkwardness, but Rose didn't have too much terrible to do. But Rafe, who's our leading man, had to show a particular part of his anatomy in a very close close-up. He was worried about it from the moment he received the script -- he wanted to get a double to do it -- and when he revealed himself, frankly he had nothing to be worried about. Even if you don't like comedy, if you don't like British people, it's worth seeing this movie to see a truly wonderful penis."
