Exciting New TV Shows Set in NYC!

As America’s biggest city and the center of American business and culture, it’s no surprise that year after year New York is home to more than its fair share of each network's new fall shows. Based on trailers, casting, and a healthy dose of speculation, we ranked the most exciting new shows set in the Big Apple.

maxresdefault5. Super Fun Night

Rebel Wilson has been slowly making a name for herself in recent years, appearing in a small role in "Bridesmaids", hosting the MTV Movie Awards, and showing up in a breakout role in "Pitch Perfect".  It’s all been leading up to her star turn in ABC’s "Super Fun Night", in which Wilson stars as an attorney who has a weekly tradition of hanging out inside with her two best friends every Friday Night.  When she gets a promotion and meets a cute British lawyer who invites her to spend her Friday at a hip Manhattan club, Wilson convinces her friends to come out, upgrading regular fun night to "Super Fun Night".  Wilson is somewhat polarizing; fans will likely love the show, which seems to be primarily a vehicle for her through and through. For those who fall in the opposite camp, however, the trailer is less than promising to say the least.

Blair+Underwood+Ironside4. Ironside

Blair Underwood stars as NYPD detective Robert Ironside in this remake of a 1960s series of the same name starring Raymond Burr.  Ironside is paralyzed and permanently wheelchair-bound after being injured in a shooting, but he’s as effective and unorthodox as ever in spite of his physical handicaps.  He assembles his own personal crack team of police officers to take on the most difficult cases in the city, leading them while playing by his own rules.  "Ironside" airs on NBC but seems likely to be similar to the somewhat unmemorable color-by numbers police procedurals CBS is best known for.

MichaelJFoxShow3. The Michael J. Fox Show

Almost fifteen years after revealing his Parkinson’s disease to the public, Michael J. Fox makes his long awaited return to a network television starring role in this eponymous NBC sitcom. He plays a well-loved local newsman who retired due to Parkinson’s, only to come back to work, in spite of the disease, after he drives himself and his family crazy during retirement.   "Breaking Bad"’s Betsy Brandt stars as his wife and "The Wire"’s Wendell Pierce stars as his boss.  Buzz is high, largely due to the return of the Fox, a TV legend who won Emmys for both "Family Ties" and "Spin City", but the show looks fairly dated stylistically, especially compared to the quality single camera comedies NBC’s been putting out in recent years.

ae02bc7f032ac1b9_lucky.preview2.  Lucky 7

"Lucky 7" takes place in Queens, the home borough of series like "All in the Family" and "Ugly Betty", and tells the story of seven employees at an Astoria gas station who, after years of unsuccessful attempts, win the lottery and strike it rich. As unbridled happiness would likely not make for a particularly interesting show, the lottery winnings create as many problems as they solve.  The diverse ensemble cast consists largely of TV first-timers, with the exception of Isiah Whitlock Jr. who played corrupt State Senator Clay Davis in "The Wire".  Like so many other shows these days, ABC’s "Lucky 7" is based on a foreign show with a similar premise, in this case, Great Britain's "The Syndicate".  It will be difficult to deliver on, but the premise isn't one that we've seen dozens of times already, which is a rarity on network television these days.

brooklyn_nine_nine1. Brooklyn Nine Nine

Andy Samberg stars on Fox as a talented by immature member of Brooklyn’s finest in this half hour single camera comedy from Michael Schur, the creator of "Parks and Recreation".  If Schur can do for Andy Samberg half of what he did for Amy Poehler, herself, like Samberg, a "Saturday Night Live" alum seen by some as too wacky to play a lead, this will be a roaring success.  The cast beside him is equally enticing; TV veteran Andre Braugher of "Homicide", "Men of a Certain Age", and "Last Resort", takes on his first comedic television role, as Samberg’s no-nonsense new captain. Up and coming comedienne Chelsea Peretti and former "The State" member Joe  Lo Truglio (known by many for his brief role as "You guys on myspace?" guy from "Superbad") also appear as other station coworkers of Samberg.
