Review: ‘Tis the Season to be Morbid

ab

Playing at Pangea (one of New York's best little cabaret clubs) this holiday season is 'Tis the Season to be Morbid, starring Austin Pendleton and Barbara Bleier. There's a little bit of holiday cheer (despite the title), a bunch of really terrific song selections (Maltby & Shire, Amanda McBroom, and more), and a host of offbeat comedy shtick between Austin and Barbara about past romantic involvements, breakups, and more. Feeding into this humor, director Barbara Maier (yes, a similar name!) steps onto the stage as the couple's analyst.

This is not an evening about great voices. Instead, the personalities, comedy, and overall effect of the evening is more to the fore. But kudos goes out to Paul Greenwood, the terrific musical director and pianist of the evening, who plays smoothly and brilliantly the entire time, keeping the entire show in check.

'Tis the Season to be Morbid is playing at Pangea again Dec. 12th, and again on Jan. 5th, 2017.
