Veterans and servicemen need theater too. That’s why, for the fifth consecutive year, husband-and-wife actors Adam Driver and Joanne Tucker are producing a special performance on Veteran’s Day (this year it’s Monday, Nov. 11) devoted to members of the military.
Driver, last on Broadway in 2011’s Frank Langella starrer, “Man and Boy”, and best known for playing the boyfriend on HBO’s “Girls”, joined the Marines shortly after 9/11. As such, each year Arts in the Armed Forces (AITAF) creates an evening of monologues, scenes and music that is free for current servicemen, veterans and their families. Civilians may also attend the performance, which takes place at Broadway’s American Airlines Theater, for a $25 donation.
Taking part in the show will be Driver and Tucker, “Girls” creator Lena Dunham, veteran actress Marylouise Burke, “Friends” alum David Schwimmer, “Office” alum Amy Ryan (who played Stella in the 2005 Broadway “Streetcar” revival), Michael Shannon, Tracie Thoms and Jesse J. Perez.
Those wishing to donate a bit more ($500, that is) can join a post-show cocktail reception at the American Airlines Theater’s penthouse. Not only can you mingle with the cast, but you can record “digital video greetings” that will be shown to wounded soldiers who aren’t well enough to be furloughed home for the holidays.
