Yes, Virginia, there are awards for off-off-Broadway. Not only that, unlike so many other award ceremonies smooshed together at the end of the Broadway season, the New York Innovative Theater Awards happen in late September – the 30th, to be precise.
This year’s event, taking place at the Baruch Performing Arts Center, will honor more than 100 off-off-Broadway productions, as well as 60 individual artists and 60 theater companies. Comedian Harrison Greenbaum hosts, with presenters expected to include “Urinetown” writer Greg Kotis, playwright Dael Orlandersmith, actor David Drake and more.
The IT Awards were founded by the New York Innovative Theater Foundation, which advocates for off-off-Broadway “and recognizes the unique and essential role it plays in contributing to American and global culture.”
