A Quick Chat with Max Crumm of "The Fantasticks"

MaxCrumm_Pic[3]When we first heard Max Crumm would be joining the cast of The Fantasticks we - like any decent human being -  couldn't contain our excitement. Max is one of the theater's most likable personalities, not to mention one helluva singer. Since he first burst into the scene in Grease, he became that guy we can't help but root for in shows like Disaster! and F#!king Up Everything. The second thing we did, was have a quick chat with him.

First Danny Zuko in Grease and now Matt in The Fantasticks, are you planning to play every single heartthrob in all of the major musicals?

Hahahahaha!! Yes! Yes I am. All of them. Every single one.

How do you prepare to take on a part as beloved as this one?

I plan on learning the lines and the blocking as well as I can! While honestly telling the story from my point of view! I had never seen the show until last week actually so fortunately I get to approach this with a blank slate.

Will your rendition be more Kenneth Nelson from the original show or Joey McIntyre from the movie?

It will probably be more like Alan Cumming or Nathan Lane!

What song in the show are you looking forward to performing the most?

I love singing "I Can See It" and "Metaphor".

Can you comment on the show’s longevity? Why do you think it keeps running year after year?

I think a classic magical love story will always hold up! Plus this production is so legendary and excellent that people keep on coming!

Do you prefer playing the dorky hero people learn to love (like in F#!king Up Everything), or do you get most excited when people are swooning over you from the start, like in this one?

To be honest I think Matt is sort of a perfect mix between the two! But I much prefer being a dork over trying to be someone that people swoon over!

Are you finally done with Los Angeles? Can we call you an official New Yorker for once and for all?

Oh yes! LA has a special place in my heart and I go there for work occasionally but New York is my home!

When can we expect to see you back in “Wallflowers”?

Season 3 is coming back next year.

Who will be doing all the tweeting in your account when you’re in rehearsals for the show?

I will! I tweet myself.

You can catch Max in The Fantasticks starting July 8. For more on the show visit their website.

Interview: Max Crumm and Lucy DeVito on the Wacky Romance of ‘Hot Mess’

By Jose Solis

Max (Max Crumm) and Eleanor (Lucy DeVito) are thinking about getting married, but first they need to tell each other everything about their past. Eleanor talks about her mental health and issues with exes, but Max is having a hard time disclosing his past dating men. At a time when gender fluidity and queerness are becoming topics of daily conversation, Dan Rothenberg and Colleen Crabtree’s play Hot Mess feels like a breath of fresh air, not only does it discuss sex openly, but it does so through the lens of romantic comedy, creating two of the most charming lead characters in any recent play. We spoke to Crumm and DeVito about what attracted them to the show, their own dating mishaps, and comedy. When did you realize you wanted to play this part? Max Crumm: Basically after reading the script. I thought it was such an awesome opportunity to portray an LGBT character. I thought it was very funny, and I really liked the wacky romantic element. Lucy DeVito: I read the script, talked to the director and thought it would be a really fun project. It’s been really collaborative and cool to play a wacky, female lead in a rom-com. What’s the thing you have most in common with your character …Read more
