You needn't be a fan of boxing to enjoy the stimulating multimedia theatrical event that is "Tyson Vs Ali". In fact, if you've never seen a boxing match then you'll want to check out the ultimate fight between two of the greatest fighters that never got the opportunity to meet in the ring. Reid Farrington directs this brilliantly stylized production that takes us into the life and times of the two champions with larger than life personalities.
Get an inside look into a nine-round fight using real boxing footage paralleled with an ensemble of athletically gifted actors as they spar in real time and transform into unique interpretations of both Mike Tyson and Mahammad Ali. The fantastic four performers Dennis A. Allen II, Roger Casey, Femi Olagoke and Jonathan Swain could be in an actual boxing match worth watching live on an HBO special. They bring heart and humanity to the question of what it means to be an athlete who enjoys the art of fighting. Not to be forgotten is Dave Shelley, who acts as a referee for the matches and moves screens with projected images and video through the ring with purpose and ease.
Frank Boudreaux provides the text and story, showcasing the mega stars as they explore what boxing means on a personal level. Each round is titled, giving us perspective while we look at the actors going blow for blow. When the gladiators aren't mesmerizing us with their agility and endurance, they speak to the audience, transforming with their physical gestures and supreme verbal and tonal portrayals.
The design team behind this knock-out performance is every bit as present as the performers, aiding the creation of a seemingly real gym in Performance Space 122 immensely. Set and video designer Simon Harding, along with lighting designers Laura Mroczkowski and Nick Ryckert, are pros in their fields, every moment in sync with the action at hand.
"Tyson Vs Ali" is co-produced by 3-Legged Dog Productions and PS122's Coil Festival and this live production will be filmed in both 2D and 3D. You don't want to miss it and if the filmed versions are anything similar to the live production "Tyson Vs Ali" is going to be a T.K.O in box offices.
Through Jan. 25th at 3LD Art & Technology Center.
