An Interview with 'ROOMIESS' Edward Kiniry-Ostro and Sal Neslusan

ROOMIESS-PR (Cleanse) ROOMIESS is a new sketch comedy web series from creators/actors Edward Kiniry-Ostro and Sal Neslusan. Ed and Sal play Stu and Syd respectively, and the series follows their every day lives and awkward situations from the comedic lens of their very small apartment. We talked to the comedic duo about the series and what they have in store in the future.

How did you come up with the idea for the series?

Sal: We had seen each other's work and really enjoyed it and knew we wanted to work together, so the series comes off of our real relationship. We wanted to keep the locations really simple, so that’s where the idea of the apartment came from. We shot it all in these really small rooms.

So there are reflections of yourselves in the characters you play?

Ed: Oh, yeah. Like for instance I’m an idiot and Sal is just with me.

Sal: My character is the nerdier one, but we wrote the episodes so the characters sound like us.

Ed: Just amped up versions, though. We originally started with what we know but now I hope to god I’m not Stu. He'd be fun to hang out with but it would get pretty annoying.

Where did some of the ideas for the episodes come from?

Sal: A lot of the ideas came from actual situations. We do these "bits" along with the actual episodes that are a lot shorter. One day my best girlfriend called me crying about a spider. So we wrote a sketch about it.

Ed: Yeah, we have the conversation about fosho and fusho in real life, like how it's pronounced, and that shows up. Another time I had really bad breath and our friend who plays Kristen asked if I farted. I just had really bad breath. But you can see that the comedy comes from every day situations. For the episodes Sal and I just went through previous roommates and recalled what was funny. But if you learn anything about me from this interview it's that I don’t brush my teeth and I’m an idiot (Laughs).

Is the series generally scripted or improved, including the bits?

Sal: It's totally scripted but there's definitely things we came up with on set.

Ed: It took about 3 months to write and we went through different incarnations, reworked it after every table read. Then we were set and started production. We were really open to working with our director David Applegate, and our ultimate goal was to make it funny and throw it to the crew for any suggestions or ideas.

So you had a good relationship with the crew working on the series?

Sal: We loved working together

Ed: There was energy the entire shoot, which was long, but we didn’t stop laughing the entire time. Everyone was into it and feeding off of each other.

Sal: We had so much fun during post production working with the editor, too. I’ve had such a blast.

Ed: Pretty much, we haven't stopped laughing for 3 months.

ROOMIESS-PR (PJ Intro)The theme song/opening is very catchy. What’s the backstory behind that?

Ed: It's actually our second song. Alana Da Fonseca is our composer and she's incredible. First song was too mid tempo, and it was her idea to made it more upbeat. The whole song is different from what it was originally.

Have you ever considered the possibility of a full-TV or Netflix series? Would you ever try/have you tried? Or do you think it’s better suited for the web?

Sal: We haven’t tried yet but of course we’d be interested. Our dream is to be on a syndicated show but right now we wanted to show this is what we do, this is our sense of humor, and hopefully open some doors

Ed: Well put, Sal!

Sal: Thanks, Ed!

Can we expect more episodes in the future and do you have ideas spinning?

Sal: We don’t have anything planned but we definitely would like to make more. Right now we're focused on getting the first season released.

Ed: Maybe I’m speaking too soon, but I have a feeling we'll make more.

Do you have any more projects lined up past ROOMIESS?

Ed: I did a short film so I’m doing the festival circuit

Sal:: I just booked a short that's shooting next week. We’re both actors looking for the next door to open.

Ed: You can go to holdupheart.com to learn more about the short I did. I play a guy trying to rob a liquor store so I can get a nose job but my ex is working there. It's really runny.

ROOMIESS' ten 2-minute episodes will debut on Tuesday, August 12 on YouTube. Click here to learn more.
