Steve Carell: Too cool for school

Steve CarellStageBuddy met up with Steve Carell at the premier of his new coming of age film, "The Way, Way Back."  He talked with us about being the cool kid in school and fitting in.

StageBuddy: How was it shooting in Massachusetts?

Steve Carell: I'm from Massachusetts! I loved it, it was the first time I ever shot anything there, it was like a working vacation!

StageBuddy: The film centers around a water park, if you worked at a water park, what would you like to do?

Carell: I'd like to be someone manning the gate at the [water] park because of that anticipation everyone has on the top of the slide. Because I know when you get on the top of the slide, you don't wanna go down... just a sociological study of what people are going through.

StageBuddy: While growing up did you have any trouble fitting in?

Carell: I was so self-assured and confident as a child. I never had anything, it was sort of a perfect upbringing. No one EVER gave me trouble in school, I was well-liked universally. [laughs]

StageBuddy: You have so much self-confidence, I wish I could be like you!

Carell: See, that's the thing, everyone admired me! [laughs] You know, everyone feels like an outsider. I think that even the most self-assured person feels a little bit outside of the game at times. I think that's one of the things this movie speaks to, that everybody feels...

Carell: Right, am I right? Everyone is an outsider, that's my point!

Jim Rash: Right, that's why I was standing outside you, to hear your point.

Carell: I'm promoting the movie... I think I'm doing a pretty good job!

Rash: ...Just checking in.

Carell (Back to StageBuddy):  I think the movie is really relatable.

StageBuddy (Julia Melim): Can I ask for a hug? Then I can say Steve Carell hugged me and my friends will think I'm cooler, so I can feel better about myself.

Carell (after the hug):  Spread the love!

Along with Steve Carell, "The Way Way Back" also stars Toni Collette, Allison Janey, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph, AnnaSophia Robb and Liam James and is written & directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.
