After a period of darkness, a starry revival of “The Sunshine Boys” is finally opening in Los Angeles and may cast its eyes back to New York depending on the show’s reception. Neil Simon’s classic comedy about two geriatric ex-vaudevillians brought together for one last hurrah first opened in London in 2012 and featured Danny DeVito and Richard Griffiths. Los Angeles was supposed to be next, but Griffiths, of “The History Boys” and “Harry Potter” film fame, died this past March. That left the show in limbo until the producers decided the show must go on – with a “Taxi” reunion.

“The Sunshine Boys” now stars DeVito reunited with his “Taxi” cabbie employee, Judd Hirsch, and it opens Oct. 2 at Center Theater Group’s the Ahmanson Theater. Also starring are Justin Bartha, Annie Abrams, Matthew Bohrer, Benjamin Burdick, Gibby Brand, Johnnie Fiori, Frank Kopyc and PaSean Wilson.

If the 1972 comedy (which was revived in 1997 with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall), does get back to Broadway, it would be author Simon’s first appearance on The Street since the 2010 revival of “Promises, Promises” and his first non-musical since the box-office failure of David Cromer’s fine “Brighton Beach Memoirs” revival in 2009.
