Netflix is flying high lately thanks to the success of its original series "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black". Hoping to keep the good vibes going, the online rental service has premiered its latest original show: "Derek".
"Derek" is written, produced, and directed by Ricky Gervais who is also the star. He is the foul-mouthed British comedian behind "The Office" and "Extras". Despite being touted as a "Netflix Original", the first season of "Derek" has actually already aired in the UK.
Gervais plays Derek Noakes, a simpleton working at an old folks home. Derek is overwhelmingly kind-hearted and well-intentioned, while being remarkably vulnerable thanks to his naivete and low intelligence. He is so simple that many who watch the show wrongly label the character as mentally disabled.
This mockumentary shows the lives of the residents and passersby of the home, and how Derek goes above and beyond his job description to help them. "Derek" has been greeted tepidly by critics thus far, many praising its humor and heart while others call it overly mushy. Despite Gervais' insistence that Derek is not mentally disabled, it hasn't stopped the show from drawing controversy from people that claim it mocks those with mental handicaps.
